MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation Gives Grant to MIFA Life Skills Institute
Memphis, Tennessee (February 17, 2009) - The MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation has given a $10,000 grant to support the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA) Life Skills Institute for the second consecutive year.
The MIFA Life Skills Institute provides life-changing education that guides homeless families toward self improvement and independence. In addition to the classes, families receive transitional housing and case management through the MIFA Housing Opportunities program.
While in the housing program for up to a year, clients learn how to be financially independent and how to create a positive environment for their children. They participate in group activities, work with case managers to pay down debt and learn positive parenting techniques to guide their children.
The MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation provides Gold Strike Casino Resort employees the opportunity to make direct contributions or divert a portion of their paycheck to charitable organizations. Employees have options for their donations including: selecting a charity of their choice; an Employee Emergency Relief Fund,; the United Way; or the Voice Foundation Community Fund, which provides grants to charitable organizations selected by a group of MGM MIRAGE employees who are members of the Community Voice Council (CVC).
Caprice Snyder, MIFA's vice president of children and families, states, "Last year, we provided housing and life-changing education for 180 parents and more than 350 children living in our 96 apartment units. This grant from the MGM MIRAGE Voice Foundation makes it possible for us to continue providing these classes so when these families leave MIFA, they can be equipped with the necessary skills to make it on their own."
"At a time of unprecedented challenge in our region and our nation, MGM MIRAGE is committed to supporting the communities where we live, work and care for our families," said George P. Corchis, Jr., president and chief operating officer of MGM MIRAGE's Mississippi resorts, which includes the Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica and Beau Rivage in Biloxi. "We are honored to play a role in such a valuable life-changing program."
Gold Strike's parent company, MGM MIRAGE, absorbs all administrative costs for operating and managing the Voice Foundation including the creation and dissemination of the requests for proposals for the grant funds and the actual distribution of the monies. As a result, 100 percent of every dollar pledged by employees goes directly to the charitable organization. In order to qualify for funds, organizations must have an IRS nonprofit status and cannot be political in nature.
